RIP OF THE WEEK : One Way (ft Al Hudson) - Tonight

Sorry for the lack of activity on the blog as of late, in order to make up for it here is a very special tune ripped cleanly (as possible) off my very own 7".

This tune is a rarity of sorts, the B-side to the way-more-famous "Music" single by One Way, a fine example of the talents of wunderkind producer: Kevin McCord. Never released on LP this great song was only available on 12" and the 7".

Kevin McCord is one of the reasons why I started collecting records. After I heard his jam "Never Say" on a Dam Funk mix I needed more. I turned this record up on my 3rd ever visit to a record store, $2.

It's not a wall to wall dance floor destroyer, just a lovely groove with some trademark piano, and frequent collaborator Alicia Myers on the vocal. An early example (1979) of the brilliance of Mr Kevin McCord. Hopefully you all enjoy this song as much as I do.

Bileebob- Get A Phone

Billeebob is a slept on bad-ass DJ and producer from Detroit who I remember to be running shit on the underground party circuit in the 1990s (and could still well be for all I know). Here's a lil slice of techno-comedy a la Detroit Grand Puba's 'Sandwiches'...

HIT IT AND QUIT IT April 12, 2010 w/ OLIVERWHO FACTORY

If you haven't heard of the Oliverwho Factory until now you probably haven't been checking our playlists all that closely. We have been steady banging their productions for awhile now- all of them irresitably soulful, interesting and experimental. This artistic duo (Darryl and Shone) have admittedly maintained a low profile over the last 7 years of producing records for their Madd Chaise label, but the music speaks VOLUMES. Listen in as I get a chance to chat with the OWF about everything from the music industry, the creative music-making process and inner city pressure.

For more information and heat from the OWF visit their label site- Madd Chaise.

Side note, I was fitting to get a minute of an interview in with Derrick May but it didn't happen due to time zone restraints... I'll see if I can corner him for a minute while he's here to talk about the good ol' days of 80s Detroit.

Last bit of news, you can now SUBSCRIBE to our podcast via iTunes/RSS (at the bottom). Many thanks to our HIQI family members Chris Mills and Ben Lawson for taking the time to hook this up!

Now without any further ado... lets just get on with the show.

Derrick May in Auckland, NZ- April 15, 2010 at Be Club + DJ Mix

It has been more than a few years since I caught up with the Detroit techno godfather known as Derrick May. The last time we played together was in Yokohama (also with our main man Ibex aka Tony Ollivierra, brother to Transmat's Neil Olivierra) way back in 2003 or '04.

Lucky me 6 years later when I find myself rapping to Derrick's not-so-secret agent about his pending return to the south seas. As it turned out Derrick's gig in Auckland had fallen through last minute, so with the help of some friends (Nick D and Marie at Be, propers!) we were able to secure an 11th hour venue.

Auckland, this is going to be a burner of a night. Don't sleep. To re-iterate...

And to get us in the dancing mood??? My man Adam in Detroit supplied HIQI with this nice slice of Derrick May live in Tokyo to share with all the heads out there: Derrick May- Hi Tek Soul Mix Tokyo.

Also tune into our Hit It and Quit It show this Monday as I attempt to get a little airtime with the one known as Mayday himself. Barring that you can peep the rest of our Detroit double feature with a very special profile on the Oliverwho Factory, a Detroit duet who have been steadily churning out a string of beautifully complex and soulful techno classics since 2003.

Detroit is so crazy. I just hung out with 23 random people and Dez in his living room playing the sweetest soul joints for about 4 hours. In New Zealand.

HIT IT AND QUIT IT Dec. 14, 2009- Anthony 'Shake' Shakir Special

This week we present to you our very special Anthony 'Shake' Shakir special. I was particularly ambitious in that I did a live mix and was cue-ing up the interview (which I sliced into about twelve 'themed' segments), plus the George studio has been in shambles for months now (no headphone cue to hear voice-overs for instance) so its a little rough around the edges. But judging from the reactions we've been getting the vibe was all there. A little background on Shake and recent news...

Photobucket

Next month Rush Hour is releasing an Anthony 'Shake' Shakir retrospective called 'Frictionalism' on 3XCD, 4X limited edition vinyl 12"s, and digital. Shake started Frictional Records in 1994 with musical comrade Claude Young, putting out fifteen ambitious Detroit Techno 12" releases over the years.

Shake has been an inspiration and a friend since we met in the middle late 1990s in Detroit. I was just starting out releasing music for Planet E and getting a first hand crash course into the Detroit electronic music scene. Shake's records quickly lured my ear to his personal production style. It had all the traits of Detroit techno up to that point- dark, melancholy, funk-driven, synthetic but soulful. But on top of these Motor City trademarks there was something distinct about Shake's sound- it skillfully melded not only percussive layers of synths and drum machines but also had a pronounced hip-hop aesthetic to it, especially in its use of sampling.

My fondest memories of Shake took place at Detroit's own daily music convention center- Record Time in Roseville. This is where all the local records would come out on a weekly basis and there was always a crew of DJs looking to get their hands on the new stuff on the day the orders would come in. Shake was usually up there unofficially leading the proceedings. He'd have a stack of 12"s in front of him and wasn't shy about hijacking the house system to listen to his pickings. Shake is a guy who doesn't mince his words- he was always brutally honest and usually pretty hilarious in what he thought about what he laid his ears on. I'm just lucky I avoided Roseville the day my records dropped on the release sheet...

Shake was also the guy who I first heard use the term 'life issues' and their power to compel better music out of an artist (no doubt a recurring theme for most people from the city of Detroit). While we didn't talk about it much in our conversation, Shake is no stranger to his own life issues, having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000, today left unable to walk and faced with the daily struggle of paying for medicine in a country that has had little interest in looking after its own. As debilitating as this disease is, it hasn't kept him down- he's back in the studio and was heading to Germany for a tour the day after our conversation took place.

Not only does Shake remain to be Detroit's most innovative and unsung techno producer, he is also renowned for having an opinion on just about everything, which no doubt made for a great interview.

I'll be posting the FULL unedited interview later this week but thought I'd get this up in the meantime for you. Note, it starts about 45 minutes in. Enjoy...
