RIP OF THE WEEK : One Way (ft Al Hudson) - Tonight

Sorry for the lack of activity on the blog as of late, in order to make up for it here is a very special tune ripped cleanly (as possible) off my very own 7".

This tune is a rarity of sorts, the B-side to the way-more-famous "Music" single by One Way, a fine example of the talents of wunderkind producer: Kevin McCord. Never released on LP this great song was only available on 12" and the 7".

Kevin McCord is one of the reasons why I started collecting records. After I heard his jam "Never Say" on a Dam Funk mix I needed more. I turned this record up on my 3rd ever visit to a record store, $2.

It's not a wall to wall dance floor destroyer, just a lovely groove with some trademark piano, and frequent collaborator Alicia Myers on the vocal. An early example (1979) of the brilliance of Mr Kevin McCord. Hopefully you all enjoy this song as much as I do.

RIP OF THE WEEK: Con Funk Shun- Get Down With It

Yep, its RIP OF THE WEEK time. Here's some party funk I played on Monday that got the broze craning necks.

While this is by no means mega rare, it HAS been a funk staple of my box for going on eons now- impeccably executed disco funk, punctuated by staccato clavinets, finely glazed with crowd noise and moog solos, topped off with that tried and true hype-it-up tactic- the city by city roll call!

Grab this album if you see it, not hard to find and contains some rock solid joints (also check 'Time'). Appears on 'Organized ConFunkShun' (Pickwick 1973).

[Side note... Like most funk bands making the transition from 70s to 80s, Con Funk Shun decided to flip their 'look'. All you have to do is peep the cover of their 'To The Max' album- from the dirty funk to pink sweaters in just under ten years. But as we say in the music business, mugs gotta eat.

RIP OF THE WEEK: Ureaus- Let Our Music Make Love To You

A new installment to the HIQI blog! Bleeeeve it!

The included photo is not mine, its from the OG 45 release. I WISH this was the 'disco version' though. This version is ripped from my 'Abet Review' compilation circa 1976, clocking in at around 3:00. It says this about Ureaus:

"WASHINGTON, D.C. Ureaus is a super group from the Washington area. This dynamite group is a real crowd pleaser as evidenced by their recording 'Let Our Music Make Love To You'. And this it does. You will fall in love with Ureaus and their music."

Also: "Excello 2345- Let Our Music Make Love To You"

Odd that so little is actually written about this 'super group'. The other profiles on this compilation are a bit more extensive but this is by far the stand out track.

A staple of my crates for the last 10 years, nuff said. Enjoy!

The Nite-Liters- "Drumology"

I was given the wrong Hit It show from the station today so we'll have to wait one more day for the Mad Mats guest mix thriller....

In the meantime I thought I'd post this Nite-Liters jam I've been wearing out (literally) since my man Craig Huckaby dropped it on me years ago, acquired straight from a water-logged basement. There are some other joints on 1973's Analysis record ("Happy Hooker" and the cover of "Valdez in the Country" are nice) but this is the one that's been on steady whoop it up repeat. See also, New Birth.
