RIP OF THE WEEK: Con Funk Shun- Get Down With It

Yep, its RIP OF THE WEEK time. Here's some party funk I played on Monday that got the broze craning necks.

While this is by no means mega rare, it HAS been a funk staple of my box for going on eons now- impeccably executed disco funk, punctuated by staccato clavinets, finely glazed with crowd noise and moog solos, topped off with that tried and true hype-it-up tactic- the city by city roll call!

Grab this album if you see it, not hard to find and contains some rock solid joints (also check 'Time'). Appears on 'Organized ConFunkShun' (Pickwick 1973).

[Side note... Like most funk bands making the transition from 70s to 80s, Con Funk Shun decided to flip their 'look'. All you have to do is peep the cover of their 'To The Max' album- from the dirty funk to pink sweaters in just under ten years. But as we say in the music business, mugs gotta eat.

Bileebob- Get A Phone

Billeebob is a slept on bad-ass DJ and producer from Detroit who I remember to be running shit on the underground party circuit in the 1990s (and could still well be for all I know). Here's a lil slice of techno-comedy a la Detroit Grand Puba's 'Sandwiches'...

RIP OF THE WEEK: Terry-T.- My Way Home (Get This Party Jumpin')

Photobucket
Hot pic, but you'll need 3D glasses to read it.

After the post that I did on Hip-House on here I thought this would be appropriate for my first HIQI "RIP OF THE WEEK".

This is a stand out tune which is way faster than anything else on the 12" sampler of his album "The Oaktown Sound". That said, I like to listen to it a little slower than this (around -4) but in the spirit of archiving it, I recorded it at its true speed.

Said recording is a touch on grimy side due to some rinsed needles and
because Terry put this out himself on his own "Tee's Records" imprint. Keep it real I say...

So slow it down, get your two step on and watch out for the hot piano solo at the end.

P.S. Warning for all the DJs : the drums start falling out of time towards the end, mix out of that shit!

HIT IT & QUIT IT- Aug. 2, 2010

Yes, I'm pretty sure this show was smoking. Or at least it felt like it was on fire at the time... just let it warm up past the first few mixes lol...

And introducing.... our new HIQI segment- 'RUFFCUTZ'- where we feature semi-finished hot-off-the-presses beat business from the crew. This week, double billin' with our main man Jellphonic (aka Jellphonzee) AND Frank Booker. Very heated.

And here are some visual accompaniments mined from our set...

omg, mood music like a motherfuck. the 80s are definitely the most future-est of all the decades, puddin proof right here.

RIP OF THE WEEK: The Futures- Ain't No Time Fa Nuthin'

Photobucket

Where to start with this tune? HUGE! I first copped this on an old Philly compilation by the righteous Norman Jay, many moons ago, where it was THE standout tune (big call, especially when other names on the comp were the cream of Philadelphia International!)

It really came into it's own for me though when I moved to London a few years back, and would hear it played on many occasions at Jazz Re:Freshed, an excellent night on Portobello Road (still run to this day by the mighty Uprock crew. Big ups!)... Also shouts to the master, Manuel Bundy, who I've heard drop this more than once or twice!

Beautiful arrangement, beautiful vocals (check the baritone and falsetto styles!), wonderful soul music. Bump this, nice and loud, ripped from vinyl to a nice 320 mp3. Enjoy!
