HIT IT & QUIT IT- August 29, 2011 (Ashford & Simpson Tribute)

Something a bit different for our upload this week. For more than half the show we gave a world exclusive premiere to the DJ mix of our brand new 'Hit It & Quit It Radio Revue Volume 1' compilation. We decided rather than post it up here, you can go and support us when it comes out digitally and on CD, and also Serato pressing. We'd be very grateful!

So, we've decided to post a brief tribute I put together to the late, great Nick Ashford of Ashford & Simpson who sadly passed away on August 22.

Ashford & Simpson are responsible for not just one or two or my all time favourite jams, but a multitude of them: 'Over & Over' (The Sylvester version of course!), 'Bourgie, Bourgie', 'Stay Free', 'It Seems to Hang On', 'California Soul', 'I'm Every Woman', 'Let's go get Stoned', 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'..... Their canon of work is incredible, both as artists, producers & of course, song writers.

I was talking to a friend about how the mark of a truly great song is when you can pinpoint certain moments in your life when you heard it. I've got lots of moments like that with the music of Ashford & Simpson: Hearing Phil Asher & Patrick Forge play 'Stay Free' at their long running Inspiration, Information night at the Notting Hill Arts Club, and seeing the whole crowd singalong. Hearing Manuel Bundy play 'Bourgie, Bourgie' as the last track at the end of my wedding after party. Hearing Norman Jay drop 'California Soul' at Notting Hill Carnival to unbelievable scenes. The list goes on & on...

The mix is put together in a no frills, no tricks style.... It's simply a brief collection of some of my favourite tunes either written, produced or performed by Ashford & Simpson. We hope you enjoy it.

HIT IT and QUIT IT- Aug. 22, 2011 [THE COVER VERSION SPECIAL pt. 1]

Over the years as a producer, I have attempted to re-create (or just stumble through) some of my favorite songs, both live and in the studio. Through this process I have had to ask myself- what makes for a good cover version? Should a cover be a faithful rendition? A complete re-interpretation? A genre, vibe or tempo flip? And should some songs, for whatever reason, not be touched with a ten foot pole?

The first step seems to be picking the right song to cover. How many cover versions of average or downright horrible songs have you heard (not to be confused with 'How many horrible versions of songs have you heard?'... think karaoke)? Probably few to none- what is the point of re-living a lackluster, unmemorable musical moment? Thus it should be no surprise that a well-written, catchy, thoughtful, layered, message-laden classic makes for perfect cover version fodder. Hence the frequency of Beatles, Stevie, Sly Stone, Burt Bacharach, Doors etc. covers I found while rifling through my records for this week's 'Cover Version Special'. A great song will usually inspire a slew of cover versions, often times released within a mere few years or less of the original release (or so it went back when vinyl was still being produced and jazz musicians had to find new ways to pay their bills).

Be warned- this week's show is a haphazard live-to-air assembly of a diverse array classics as you've never (or seldomly) heard before. With Frank Booker on leave this week and 3 new interns in the house it was hectic and fun all at the same time... (Biggups Jana, Koko B Ware and Shake n Blake, our newest additions to the HIQI fandamily)
