Why Sheep?- Earthborn (Recloose Remix)

This came out in 2002. I didn't know anything about 'Why Sheep?' but the remix turned out pretty nice...

What I take away from this was how dope the Waldorf Microwave XT was (think 'Get There Tonight'). Need to get that one back into the bunker.

This week's installment features a guest mix from our main man Dean Zhou aka Funk Bast*rd, a great DJ from the Singapore scene who's knowledge of contemporary music kind of floored me on my latest trip (dude knew everything!). Be sure to peep his site, lots of other great radio shows are hosted there... and Hit It and Quit It will soon join the ranks.

And if anybody wants a copy of that 'Absence of One/Can't Take It Demo-Megamix' say the word and I'll put it up this week...

Thanks to Chris Cox (oh the banter), Jellphonic, and Isaac Aesili for falling through the piece. And if you're in New Zealand go buy Julien Dyne's new album 'Pins and Digits'. Now.

I'm off to Wellington this morning to mix STARBLAZERS. Can't wait til its unleashed. Keep your ears open... Arohanui!

Recloose- Turkish Delight (Southern Fried Disco Demo)

Here's an early and ridiculous version of Turkish Delight, a tune that originally appeared on Hiatus on the Horizon. I'm cracking up listening to the original madness... Edit anyone??

Featuring the impeccable stylings of NZ's baddest rhythm guitarist Mike Fabulous (aka MSG the Flavor Enhancer).

Here's a lil Recloose rarity for your jiggling enjoyment. This is a tune I did a few years back that didn't escape the Japanese market (you'll figure it out when you hear the lyrics). B-boy techno for real... I've got the instrumental somewhere, hollar if you want it...

UPDATE: Found the OG instrumental and a demo instrumental that still kind of knocks... Enjoy.

The Wizard

As a 12 year old growing up in the mid-80s Detroit area (era) nothing made more of a musical impression on me than the early radio days of Jeff Mills, aka THE WIZARD. It was a quasi-religious nightly ritual tuning into WJLB and hearing the Wiz smash through electric funk sets that made his wide palette of styles all sound like one incredible musical invention. Hip-hop was house was disco was electro was funk was anything he felt like. The Wizard was THE original b-boy techno turntablist.

This approach to music and dance music in general sticks with me to this day, and so it was with great excitement that I recently found some cassette rips of his early shows (large ups to DJ Needlz and the Detroit Techno Militia for sharing these!). I'm STILL getting chills listening to this... Enjoy.

Herbie Hancock Demonstrates the Rhodes Piano

Kia Ora Crew and Universal Whanau...

I post this to you from my hotel room in Shanghai, where I arrived yesterday after a brilliant 5 day stint in Singapore. Many thanks to the Kinemat crew and all the new friends I made. And check this lil gem of a site, some great radio shows are being hosted here (and likely yours truly's in a minute too):

Also, mad thanks to all who came down to the Shelter in Shanghai last night, bumping goodness....

I heard reports that Chef D held down the Hit It and Quit It fort with gusto this past Monday, many thanks to the bro! I'll chase this up and post it when I get home next week. Next Monday's installment will feature a mix from my man Scott 'Monkz' Moncrieff from my Sheffield fam, as well as a virgin radio broadcast of my 'New Deal' mix.

So here's a post for the nerds. I got this lil demo floppy 7" in Detroit in the 90s and remember Kirk Degiorgio writing about this one in a magazine years back. To be honest I've been off the rhodes for awhile now but there's no denying its influence on modern music.... what better way to love out your joint than a sprinkle of Rhodes, a phaser, and a delay? Here we have Herbie pontificating and jamming on it for your pleasure. Full .aiff versions posted so if you can get rid yourself of the pops then please, sample away.
