HIT IT AND QUIT IT April 26, 2010- The JAZZ Special...

While all of us at Hit It and Quit It consider ourselves fans and lovers of the music called Jazz, for some reason we haven't found ourselves packing too much of this heady heat into our weekly crates. There are likely a few reasons for this (Jazz isn't really all that popular with the George crowd, lots of Aucklanders don't really get it, we're all still recovering from that 'NuJazz' thing, etc.). Nevertheless, we took a stand against the naysayers and dug deep into our collective vaults to come up with this show. Many thanks to our very special guests Nathan Haines and DJ Truent who both graced us with some real vinyl gems and some funny stories as well.

(And apologies for some tech issues. Chalk another one up to the disfunctional George on-air studio...)

PLUS... coming soon! The full night's recording of The Hit It and Quit It Revue vol. 5- a brilliant night of music and getting down with top Auckland crowd-rockers Manuel Bundy and DJ Truent taking us on a funk odyssey.

If you haven't heard of the Oliverwho Factory until now you probably haven't been checking our playlists all that closely. We have been steady banging their productions for awhile now- all of them irresitably soulful, interesting and experimental. This artistic duo (Darryl and Shone) have admittedly maintained a low profile over the last 7 years of producing records for their Madd Chaise label, but the music speaks VOLUMES. Listen in as I get a chance to chat with the OWF about everything from the music industry, the creative music-making process and inner city pressure.

For more information and heat from the OWF visit their label site- Madd Chaise.

Side note, I was fitting to get a minute of an interview in with Derrick May but it didn't happen due to time zone restraints... I'll see if I can corner him for a minute while he's here to talk about the good ol' days of 80s Detroit.

Last bit of news, you can now SUBSCRIBE to our podcast via iTunes/RSS (at the bottom). Many thanks to our HIQI family members Chris Mills and Ben Lawson for taking the time to hook this up!

Now without any further ado... lets just get on with the show.

Derrick May in Auckland, NZ- April 15, 2010 at Be Club + DJ Mix

It has been more than a few years since I caught up with the Detroit techno godfather known as Derrick May. The last time we played together was in Yokohama (also with our main man Ibex aka Tony Ollivierra, brother to Transmat's Neil Olivierra) way back in 2003 or '04.

Lucky me 6 years later when I find myself rapping to Derrick's not-so-secret agent about his pending return to the south seas. As it turned out Derrick's gig in Auckland had fallen through last minute, so with the help of some friends (Nick D and Marie at Be, propers!) we were able to secure an 11th hour venue.

Auckland, this is going to be a burner of a night. Don't sleep. To re-iterate...

And to get us in the dancing mood??? My man Adam in Detroit supplied HIQI with this nice slice of Derrick May live in Tokyo to share with all the heads out there: Derrick May- Hi Tek Soul Mix Tokyo.

Also tune into our Hit It and Quit It show this Monday as I attempt to get a little airtime with the one known as Mayday himself. Barring that you can peep the rest of our Detroit double feature with a very special profile on the Oliverwho Factory, a Detroit duet who have been steadily churning out a string of beautifully complex and soulful techno classics since 2003.
