Well, this is the last show of the year, and what a year its been. The show, the listenership, the Revue and the plans for 2011 have all grown significantly. There has been a collection of great moments (on-air and in the club) as well as contributions from all sorts of people who have been welcomed open arms into the extended Hit It and Quit It family. And to top it off we wrapped up the year with the biggest HIQI Revue to date, rocking the rafters with the likes of Moodymann, DJ Day, The Turnaround crew, The Dose DJs, DJ Mu and of course yours truliest, Recloose and Frank Booker. To be honest, we're all still reeling (and recovering) from this one- it was a veritable musical and artistic coup d'etat for this country (if we do say so ourselves...).
KDJ... photo credit: DJ Day
Before we get into the show, I'd like to take this opportunity to send out some heartfelt shout outs to people and institutions that have had an indelible influence on the growth of our artistic vision. In no particular order- Grace and Red Bull Music Academy for their incredible support for our just gone 'End of Year Throwdown', Serato Audio Research (and the whole damn team!) for revolutionizing our shit, Ben 'Lawsonater' Lawson for getting the shows up every week like clockwork, Sam 'Harmanizer' Harman for the good vibes and energy every week, Lakshmann Anandanayagam for making the Revue look so good, KDJ, DJ Day, DJ Kon, Dam Funk, The Oliverwho Factory, DJ Kano, Mike Cina, Eugen Danzinger, Wolf Music, Jellphonic, Young Marco, Nickodemus, Reggie Blount, Julien Dyne, Nathan Haines, Trus'me, Andy 'Submariner' Morton, Manuel Bundy, Cian O'Donnell, DJ Truent, Chef D, Dave Carroll, Rowan Herbert, Bill Gray, Tony Cooper at All City Promotions, Christiaan de Witt, Rush Hour for the consistently best promos we could ever hope for, George FM, Ponsonby Social Club, Cesar Ramirez, Ghostly International, Conch Records, The Jewel School, Bharat Jamnadas, Ron Olson, Seth Wilson, Mere Naigulevu, Eric Orr, Chico Mann, James Pants, Charlie Dark, Tyler Askew, Tiger Brewery, Galatos, Khuja Lounge, The Basement, Cassette 9, Barrio, Coopers Brewery, Adrian Duff, Jason Fishwick, Metro Magazine, The City of Detroit, Scott Zacharias, Brad Hales and People's Records, Josh Dunn, Wax Poetics Magazine, Andrew Morgan at PPU, Border Music... Extra big thank you to the handful of people I surely just forgot to thank (I'm sure I'll remember over the holidays, kicking myself). And finally, a mighty and hearty thanks to YOU, the listener... who have made us one of the most popular shows on George FM and continually encourage us to keep on with this crazy thing called Hit It and Quit It.
Whooooooeeee..... *Catching breath.* So I won't front, coming up with a radio special after the 'Revue' weekend just gone was a fairly epic challenge (all I wanted to do was sleep). But being the last show of the year and us riffing off of the 'Circle of Life' idea enticed us to get it together. So Mr. Frank Booker led the way with some of his favorite joints of the year (we are by no means claiming this to be a comprehensive 'Best Of' list, just the things that emerged out of our collective memories from the past year) and then I followed with a somewhat hap-hazard but nonetheless heartfelt tribute to 2010's fallen musical heroes. As this is our last show until 2010 we hope this will keep the HIQI fires burning in your hearts over this festive season. Happiest of holidays to you and yours from the Hit It and Quit It crew.

HIT IT AND QUIT IT- Dec. 6, 2010
We've decided to post the first half of the show for you as we've been waiting for part 2 which has unfortunately been held up. We'll get it to you as soon as we are able to. Sorry HIQI peoples, we appreciate your patience...
Large ups to Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabulous) and Reggie Blount for gracing the crew with their presence (and presents)! Anyways! Next week, we get on our radio megaphones and trumpet the RBMA Hit It and Quit It Revue next Friday and Saturday! All Kenny Dixon Jr. and DJ Day joints, plus a live-to-air interview with the man DJ Day himself. Snooze pas...

Auckland Showing a Little Bit of Love
There has been a convergence of (minor) nods emanating from Auckland the last few weeks...
First up is an odd clip ripped from the legendary New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street where two characters kick back with a glass of wine, polish their paltry dance moves and enjoy the sounds of Recloose...
Next up is a very nice review for the recent Recloose 'Early Works' release coming from the newly re-rubbed Groove Guide:
Also, a smallish 'honourable mention' in shooshy magazine Metro's Best of Auckland edition ('best friend in radio'... not sure what that means exactly but thanks!):
Also, there was a fairly epic interview I did recently with Nick Atkinson of Radio New Zealand talking about the Early Works release and the days of Detroit habitation...
Recloose interview with Nick Atkinson on Radio New Zealand (click it!)
And last but not least, here's a link to Jacob Sua's seminal Nerdy Frames blog, also with a meaty interview...

Barrio Brothers
This Saturday 4th December, myself and Recloose hit the Barrio once again (our second visit!) to play some tunes... We played a couple of months back in the midst of a crazy storm, and still managed to have a dope time (weather was truly crazy, 40 year storm styles!)... Anyways, for those of you in Auckland City, pop down 8pm onwards this Saturday, free entry, and the usual goodness: Soul, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Funk, maybe even Post Dub-Step (Recloose's new fave genre!) and whatever else takes our fancy!

HIT IT AND QUIT IT- Nov. 29, 2010: THE FOOD SPECIAL
Its the all food special, all songs you can eat!
Many thanks to our friend, foodie and music afficiando Bharat Jamnadas for coming up and cooking an immense bounty of BBQ for us. Also special thanks due to young-blood producer Sam Harman for the extra (chicken) legwork that went into putting this together behind the scenes.
Speaking of behind the scenes, you might not pick this up from our on-air cool collectedness but we had a major medical emergency half way through the show (HIQI regular Lil Nug almost lost his complete toe nail in a freak accident...) so thanks due as well to our BBQ peeps for the extra medical help (Chef D, Killamanraro and C De Witt!) plus Mr. Booker for stepping up for the second half of the show. And propers for not losing y'alls appetite after that one!
Now on with the slow-cooker...

RIP OF THE WEEK: Natural Four - Try Love Again
As promised another rip of the week with the quickness. Again the ROTW has been a feature which has matriculated as of recently, but no longer! From here on out it's shows on Tuesday and Rip on Friday so mark your calenders accordingly.
This one right here is a beautiful northern soul number on Curtis Mayfield's own Curtom label, but without anything to do with Curtis himself. The song is written by a member of The Impressions, however, in Leroy Hutson.
It's about picking yourself up and dusting yourself off. Beautiful arrangement, harmonies and lyrics are the order here, rounded off nicely with a delicate Rhodes refrain. Sure to kick your weekend off on the right foot. Ripped off the B of my very own 7" and delivered here in full 320 style.
Keep steppin'!

HIT IT & QUIT IT - November 22nd, 2010
It's starting to get nice in Auckland on Monday evenings, as a result we were feeling a bit more inclined towards starting the show on a warm weather front (excuse the pun). Maybe it's a trend that will continue as New Zealand slides its way toward a long hot summer. My song pick from the show is the rough Kon edit that Recloose perhaps shouldn't have played. Tip!
This week we also featured a hot mix from a big fan of the show from Zurich, Switzerland. Largesse to the man Eugen Danzinger aka Spit. This was a freaky mix but we were feeling it a lot, plenty of homemade blips and bloops throughout.

HIT IT & QUIT IT- November 15th, 2010
Well, it seems as though posting Hit It & Quit It shows is like waiting for a bus: You wait, wait and wait some more, then a convoy of them roll up all at once. So, with the quickness we give you, hot off the press.... The latest installment of HIT IT & QUIT IT!
"But how can you guys post it so quickly?"
I hear you asking in the land of the interweb: We simply wheel in our own recording unit (VERY similar to the one pictured above), and hence cut out the middle man (who shall remain nameless!), and VOILA! Instant radio heat direct to your computing machine.
Anyway, enough of all this hi-tech talk. What did we do on the show this week? Well, it was a wide and varied show as always, featuring new music from the likes of Marco Bernardi, a hot remix of Scuba by Falty DL (he seems to be featuring every week at the moment! Props!), Opolopo, and some re-spins for current favorites like Space Dimension Controller (seriously loving this!), Franc Spengler, and of course, future Hit It & Quit It guest of honour, Kenny Dixon Jnr aka Moodymann!
On with the show, we hope you enjoy it. HIT IT!

RIP OF THE WEEK : One Way (ft Al Hudson) - Tonight
Sorry for the lack of activity on the blog as of late, in order to make up for it here is a very special tune ripped cleanly (as possible) off my very own 7".
This tune is a rarity of sorts, the B-side to the way-more-famous "Music" single by One Way, a fine example of the talents of wunderkind producer: Kevin McCord. Never released on LP this great song was only available on 12" and the 7".
Kevin McCord is one of the reasons why I started collecting records. After I heard his jam "Never Say" on a Dam Funk mix I needed more. I turned this record up on my 3rd ever visit to a record store, $2.
It's not a wall to wall dance floor destroyer, just a lovely groove with some trademark piano, and frequent collaborator Alicia Myers on the vocal. An early example (1979) of the brilliance of Mr Kevin McCord. Hopefully you all enjoy this song as much as I do.

Hit It & Quit It: Double Edition!
Our apologies for the delay in posting last week's show. We have this thing called Daylight Savings where everybody's clocks change. Evidently the super computer at George couldn't handle the pressure and recorded some other show, or something like that. Anywaaaaaaay.....
We have two weeks worth of GRIPPING radio shows for you in one hit today: Monday 4th October & Monday 11th October. And oh my, what fine shows they were too.
Monday the 4th was very much on a HOUSE music tip, with a special tip of the hat to Mr. Aaron Carl (RIP), a special preview of an exclusive podcast Recloose has done for our good friends at Ghostly International and lots of great music from the likes of Vakula (Firecracker), The Beat Addicts, KDJ and much, much more.
This week's show was back to the usual chaotic, all over the shop (in a good way!) Hit It & Quit It. We had a packed studio full of guests, and managed to talk a bit of junk about our forthcoming Halloween edition of Hit It & Quit It (Saturday 30th October at Cassette 9, Auckland City. Hollar!). We got some great ideas for costumes.... Myself and Recloose are thinking about going as The Proclaimers. Or not.
Anyway, on with the show. Enjoy. Spread the love! HIT IT & QUIT IT! RAH!

RIP of the week: Tye Tribbett 'Mighty Long Way'
OK. Something really very special for you all this week. This came out as a re-edited version (the original was a CD only thing, and rather hard to come by) on a white label 12" bootleg with Roots Manuva vs Sa-Ra on the flip.
This was a HUGE record when it came out. It was heard all over the place in London (where I was living at the time), a big tune at Co-op and also played to death by Gilles Peterson & Benji B and any other DJ interested in Soul music. And why not: It's a joyous gospel tune with a Dilla-esque bounce to the beat (I believe Mr James Poyser is at least in part responsible for the production).
As it was only a limited bootleg release, it's virtually impossible to come by now. This version is ripped from the vinyl: Enjoy!

HIT IT & QUIT IT- September 27, 2010
Another week, another unmissable episode of Hit It & Quit It Radio (If I do say so myself).
We got to grips with all sorts in this week's show: the unreleased Starblazer's 'Sunshine' to praise the arrival of spring (yes, the weather has been SHIT in Auckland until this week. Give thanks to the Sun Goddess!), new House heat from the Nebraska & Erdbeerschnitzel, Boogie madness from Supersoulsonic (Re-edited by Mr Compost himself, Michael Reinboth alongside Christian Prommer).... Ahhh, and yes... I dropped a Recloose classic - Soul Clap 2000 - as he's too modest to plug his own stuff, but the sampler 12" to the Early Works compilation is out now, so get thee to the record emporium & cop that!
Large shouts to Mark de Clive Lowe & Nia Andrews, who did a great show at Ponsonby Social Club last week, and of course DJ Mitsu The Beats & Taro Wassupski (Jazzy Sport) @ The Turnaround for rolling through Auckland with some heat!
On with the show....

This week we catch up with Mr. Reggie Blount (David Druckman is his real life alias) to talk about unearthing and re-introducing some little known boogie fire via his burgeoning 7" vinyl business.
PLUS we talk much smack.
There were some great tunes this week that will likely need to get respun properly without your loudmouth hosts jabbering on all over them.
With that, ENJOY!

RIP OF THE WEEK: Amalgamated Funk Co. - "Take No More b/w I Wanna Take You Out"
Okay, I've been saving this one for quite awhile. Seeing as I've been slack on HIQI's newest segment "Rip of the Week" I figure its time to let loose with one of my favorite finds of the last 15 years.
First a bit of background. Up the way from our Detroit neighborhood, Woodbrige, was Grand River Avenue, a 220 mile stretch of a road that runs from downtown all the way to Michigan's capital, Lansing (and told to originally have been an Indian walking trail). From our house heading into the city you'd find Detroit icons Cass Tech High School, UR's Submerge HQ and a Wonder Bread factory now transformed into a neon monolith known as the Motor City Casino.
Heading out of the city, though, was a different story- not a lot to see but a long stretch of neighborhoods in ruin and a slideshow of broken histories. The few exeptions nearby were Steve's Soul Food (always packed on a Sunday) and a seedy looking spot called 'White's Records'. This shop was one of a few remaining White's Records in Detroit, a once proud local record chain memorialized by worn price tags on the city's second hand record troves. Here's a shot of another store in the city:
This particular shop was mostly slinging mixtapes and CDs (and...?). Most notable was it was all done from behind bulletproof glass, the only time I'd ever seen this in a music store. Out front, though, were two giant moving boxes of 7"s sent over from the main store in complete disarray, mostly missing sleeves, all going for 50 cents a pop. I fished out a few really interesting things but the one that has me most excited to this day is Amalgamated Funk Co.'s 7" Take No More b/w I Wanna Take You Out.
I couldn't find much on the story behind this record or the players other than an interview with one Harry Bowens. Harry, like so much of the Motor City's musical legacy, moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1980s but appears on this record singing lead vocals and playing keys before that move. Here are some excerpts from a 1999 interview with 'Sir Harry', who evidently is also known for his dance moves (I found this on salsastories.com).
"I was born and raised in Detroit Michigan. That’s where I got my musical education, and that’s where I learned that the word Entertainment meant you not only had to sing good, but you had to entertain the people as well. The Detroit audience was hard on anyone who was not polished. So you had to work on your craft. Yes, I had to work very hard at developing my technique so I would look professional.
I had an Acapella group called The Sincere Sincerities. We fashioned ourselves after the Temptations. (Get it) Tempting Temptations! I also worked with a band called Amalgamated Funk Company; I played the piano and sang lead vocals. My next band was called The Ebony Set. This band played more jazz music. Then there is Midnight Sky. This band played all the popular music that was currently out at the time.
I also did some work with some vocal groups in the city. I did vocal arrangements for Citation a male vocal group, and the Ridgeway Sisters, these ladies sung in the movie Blues Brothers 2000, with Aretha Franklin and James Brown."
AND he played and toured with Was (Not Was) in the 1980 & 90s... Is this guy the man or WHAT?
Without any further ado, for a limited time only, here are both sides of some sublime modern soul courtesy the Amalgamated Funk Co.

Party, party, party!
Yes indeedy. Time for another special one off 'Hit It & Quit It' event. This time myself and Recloose are taking the radio show up to Barrio on 44 Ponsonby Road. It's our maiden voyage there, and promises to be a dope night. It's a great intimate venue, and we're gonna try and recreate the vibe of the show (trash talking, lazer noises, air horns, sirens) along with some classic Friday night dancing music.
What more do you need? Friday night, if you're in Auckland City come down and check it. And buy me a god damn Coopers while you're at it!

Give The Drummer Some!
Clyde Stubblefield is THE Funky Drummer. You may not know that you know his work, but you sure DO know his work. Responsible for some of the foundation breaks, Clyde is still alive and (snare) kickin'. Last year Clyde suffered kidney failure and had to embark on weekly dialysis. You can and should read about the man's situation and import by following the link.
With the way legendary musical figures obituaries permeate so quickly in the age of social media, and they are subsequently eulogized by those who know how they'll be missed. So too is it possible to help out these extra special humans while they twist on this mortal coil with you. Clyde Stubblefield is just such an extra special human and we ain't lost him yet.
So break bread, pass the peas and
GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME!
It takes exactly 2 minutes, and if you've ever listened to hip hop, or danced to recorded music then you are in the man's debt.

HIT IT AND QUIT IT- September 6th, 2010
Back once again with the full compliment after Recloose's break last week, we had a rather hectic and lively show full of bizarre text messages from listeners and the occasional technical hitch (hopefully edited out by our engineer extraordinaire the Lawsonator!).
As you will gather we put it out the the radio audience: What should we do for our next special? There were some great and odd messages (the request for a murdered rappers special being a particularly dark highlight), but we settled on the "Animals Special".
Lots of great music on the show: of particular note were storming new cuts from BE on Movement Music, and something fresh from our very own man with the plan, Recloose, with "Crosstown" from the forthcoming Rushhour comp. Tip!
Enjoy the show, tune in for the Animals Special next week...

Credit To The Editors
I've been enjoying the Walter Gibbons 'Jungle Music' compilation since receiving a promo cd a few weeks ago.
'Jungle Music' compiles a wide range of his work from mid-late 70's stuff right through to more electronic flavours of the mid 80's. I had always had Walter Gibbons as a master of Soul & Disco, but until now wasn't aware that he made some serious electro in the 80's too. Strafe 'Set It Off'. Big tune!
The second thing is a compilation I haven't yet heard, but am very excited about: Danny Krivit's 'Edits by Mr K Volume 2'.... To me, Mr K is THE master of the subtle edit, his re-edits have ignited many a dancefloor for me down the years... So needless to say, this will be a "buy on sight" album if you have any interest in soulful music. Got that? Good. Hit It!
Danny Krivit on the subtle art of a good edit.
